About CEGS Foundation
The Centre for Eastern Ghats Studies is a research institution dedicated exclusively to advancing the conservation biology, ecology, and evolutionary biology of the Eastern Ghats and the adjoining peninsular plains. Recognising that the region remains one of India's least-studied biodiversity landscapes, CEGS seeks to build the scientific foundation necessary for effective, evidence-based conservation.
Our work integrates field ecology, taxonomy, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, spatial analysis, and long-term ecological monitoring to understand the processes that shape biodiversity. By generating high-quality scientific knowledge, CEGS supports habitat restoration, species conservation, ecological planning, and informed environmental policy.
As a field research station, laboratory, and collaborative scientific platform, CEGS undertakes original research, supports postgraduate and doctoral training, contributes to IUCN Red List assessments, documents biodiversity through species descriptions and inventories, and publishes in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The institution is committed to producing rigorous science that directly informs conservation action across the Eastern Ghats bioregion.
Mission
To generate rigorous scientific knowledge on the biodiversity, ecology, and evolutionary history of the Eastern Ghats through interdisciplinary research, long-term ecological monitoring, and field-based conservation science.
CEGS aims to strengthen conservation by:
- Conducting high-quality research in conservation biology, ecology, taxonomy, evolutionary biology, and landscape ecology.
- Building long-term biodiversity datasets to understand ecological change and guide conservation decisions.
- Supporting habitat restoration through scientific research on ecosystem processes and native biodiversity.
- Contributing to species assessments, conservation planning, and environmental policy using robust scientific evidence.
- Training the next generation of conservation scientists through field research, laboratory studies, and academic collaborations.
- Establishing the Eastern Ghats as one of India's best-documented and scientifically understood biodiversity regions.
Vision
To become the leading centre for research on the Eastern Ghats, internationally recognised for advancing knowledge in ecology, evolutionary biology, and conservation science.
CEGS envisions a future where conservation decisions are grounded in rigorous scientific evidence, native ecosystems are restored and resilient, and the extraordinary biodiversity of the Eastern Ghats is understood, protected, and valued for generations to come. Through excellence in research, collaboration, and scientific training, the institution seeks to establish the Eastern Ghats as a globally important landscape for biodiversity research and conservation.
